One of the oldest bakers on Mall Road, Krishna Bakery lived up to its reputation. I stopped here on a recommendation from locals for some kurkej. This local favourite did not disappoint, as it was crispy, warm on the inside, and a little spicy, allowing me to devour plateful after plateful. Paired with that, I had a rich chocolate pastry that was just sweet enough to indulge my sweet tooth. The bakery itself is old-world charming, full of character, and the crowd seems to be regulars who flock here for the same reason I did. It was a popular spot, but I only had to wait a few minutes for my order. 

Why bakeries in Shimla feel different from other hill stations

The baking style in Shimla produces an environment which seems to belong to a different time period. The flavours of these baked goods become apparent through their pastries and breads and through the simple butter biscuits which come in paper packaging. The trend does not seem to have appeared during the previous year. The tradition appears to have existed in secret for multiple decades as bakers shared it with each other while keeping it under wraps, which creates an authentic historical value that cannot be imitated.

Away from the busiest part of Mall Road, I stumbled upon a quieter bakery known for eggless cakes and pastries. It had a calmer atmosphere, friendly staff, and a surprisingly wide variety considering how small the space was. I picked up a few cookies here almost as an afterthought, and ended up going back the next day specifically for more. Sometimes the places you almost skip turn out to be the ones worth remembering most.

If you want to build a trip around this kind of slow café and bakery hopping, give yourself time rather than rushing between stops. Mall Road covers most of the well-known names within a short walking distance of each other, so a relaxed morning is usually enough to cover two or three spots without feeling rushed. Staying centrally makes this far easier, and a good range of hotels in Shimla put you close enough to Mall Road that you can wander out whenever the craving hits, no real planning required.
